What hurts me the most is that many people in South Africa think that if you are an undocumented foreigner, you are also an idiot or stupid.
And if you look at the people who think this way, you can easily see that they are uneducated. It makes you feel that if breathing free air depended on the current South African authorities, they would sell it to foreigners.
I am ashamed to live in South Africa, yet I have no other alternative, especially since the situation in my own country is even worse. It is sad to see such a beautiful country—one that ought to be receiving blessings from all of Africa—committing hara-kiri.
Perhaps it is the curse of the Black race; we are ashamed of our own color. You would never see white people who fled land reforms in Zimbabwe being chased out by other white people in South Africa. They possess a genuine solidarity—something Black people merely pay lip service to with words like *ubuntu*.
The problem for us Black people is not a lack of intelligence, but an inability to organize ourselves. In our respective countries, political leaders do nothing but steal money and deposit it in white-owned banks; this impoverishes our communities and drives many Africans to leave their homelands for other countries, particularly in Europe and the Americas.
Thanks to the presence of white people, South Africa maintains a certain level of organization that most other African countries have lost. Let us hope that a sense of conscience returns and that the word *ubuntu* regains its true meaning.
